Introduction For Human Resource Management
March 21, 2022.
What is Human resource ?
Prior to go for a definition of the Human Resource Management, it seems pertinent to first define the term ‘human resources”. Human resources are people who are ready, willing and have ability to contribute to organisational objective. Human resource includes all people who do the work of a company at various jobs.
As per Michael J. Jucius (1974), the
human resources is “a whole consisting of inter-related, inter-dependent and
interacting physiological, psychological, sociological and ethical components”.
From the national point of view, Leon C. Megginson (1952) has defined “ human resources are knowledge, skills, creative abilities, talents, and attitudes obtained in the population; whereas from the view-point of the individual enterprise, they represent the total of the inherent abilities, acquired knowledge and skills as exemplified in the talents and aptitude of its employees”
As an initiation, in simple word HRM is a process of making the efficient and effective use of human resources so that the set goals are achieved. For further understanding, can consider some important definitions for HRM as mentioned below .
1, According to Ronnie Flippo (1974), “Personnel management, or say, human resource management is the planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the procurement development.
2, According to Charles R. Greer (1992), Human Resource Management is the organisational function that deals with issues related to people such as compensation, hiring,
performance management, organisation development, safety, wellness, benefits,
employee motivation, communication, administration, and training.
As defined by experts, can ascertain that, Human Resource Management is based in the efficient utilisation of employees in achieving the main goals.
Objectives of HRM
The primary objective of HRM is to ensure the availability of right people for right jobs so as the organisational goals are achieved effectively. This primary objective can further be divided into the following sub-objectives:
1. To help the organisation to take
possession of its goals effectively and efficiently by providing
Loyal, motivated and competent employees.
2. To utilise the available human
resources effectively.
3. To increase employee’s job
satisfaction and self-actualisation.
4. To develop and maintain the
quality of work.
5. To help maintain ethical policies
and behaviour inside and outside the organisation.
6. To maintain a strong relation
between employees and management.
7. To reconcile individual/group goals with organisational goals.
Scope of HRM
The scope of HRM is, indeed, very vast and wide. It includes all activities starting from manpower planning till employee leaves the organisation. Accordingly, the scope of HRM consists of acquisition, development, maintenance/retention, and control of human resources in the organisation.
Functions of HRM
We have already defined HRM. The definition of HRM is based on what managers do. The functions performed by managers are common to all organisations. For the convenience of study, the function performed by the resource management can broadly be classified into two categories, as Managerial functions, and Operative functions.
